Campus Enterprises Elects New Executive Team

DURHAM, NC November 29, 2020 On Sunday night, shareholders of Campus Enterprises elected a new executive team to lead the company through the first two quarters of 2021. Brooke Kenerson (‘22) will lead the company as Chief Executive Officer, previously serving as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Enterprise Entertainment. Of the four most recent individuals to hold the position, Kenerson is the third female to serve as CEO, underscoring CE’s dedication to women in business.

Joining Kenerson on the executive team is Jacob Kitchen (‘22) who will serve as Chief Financial Officer, as well as Ananya Sadarangani (‘22) and Sophie Sanda (‘22) who will serve as Chief Operating Officers.

Kenerson will be replacing Fernanda Herrera (‘21), outgoing CEO of Campus Enterprises. Herrera’s tenure as CEO was defined by her leadership of the company during the COVID-19 pandemic, a challenging period for the business which began during her prior role as COO. Herrera’s outgoing team also included Bryant Huang (CFO) and Duncan Trerotola (COO). Remarkably, under their leadership, profits grew year over year despite the pandemic. Herrera expressed optimism for the future of the company: “We realized the importance of constantly keeping a long-term outlook, while being able to quickly react and respond to market changes. Moving forward, CE will think more critically about our businesses, always keeping sustainability in mind. I look forward to seeing how the company continues to grow and adapt to a changing Duke and a changing world.”

Durham, NC – June 8th, 2020 – Bull City Beds LLC (BCB), Duke University’s leading student-run mattress rental service, has reached a deal with Campus Enterprises LLC to acquire their business subsidiary SleepEasy.

BCB’s acquisition of SleepEasy will provide the opportunity to deliver higher quality beds, faster customer services, and increased diversity in product offerings to clients. Specifically, the deal allows BCB to increase their operations capacity and supplier leverage to procure the best bed products at the lowest price.

Michael Hong, CEO of Bull City Beds, spearheaded the acquisition and looks forward to better servicing BCB clients. “We strive to continue our mission of providing the best dorm room resting experience at affordable prices to all of our customers.”

Joseph Touma, CEO of Campus Enterprises, explained the significance of the deal to CE. “We were fielding multiple offers, but ultimately wanted to keep our business within the Duke family. This will allow us to dedicate additional time and capital to new ideas, continuing our mission of innovating to improve the Duke experience.”

The Facts About Campus Enterprises

DURHAM, NC December 2019 In light of recent conversations, Campus Enterprises is releasing some facts about our mission, business model, and philanthropic efforts.

Our Mission Statement

Campus Enterprises aims to improve the college experience for Duke students with integrity, dedication, and passion for our customers, employees, shareholders, and community. We strive for excellence in quality, customer service, and professionalism across our divisions. We promote the personal and professional development of our shareholders through mentorship and business experience and, at the same time, are dedicated to having a positive social and economic impact on Duke and Durham. This mission is advanced through our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and building stronger communities.

Our Share Price

We are dedicated to making Campus Enterprises accessible to everyone. When freshmen join the company, they become shareholders of CE by purchasing a share from outgoing seniors. CE started 25 years ago, and as we grew, our share price exceeded what we deemed appropriate for a buy-in share price, reaching a price of $10,000 at its peak. Acknowledging the problematic nature of such a high share price, the executive team crafted a plan in 2016 to lower the share price to $0 by 2026. Upon graduation, seniors are bought out at exactly the same price at which they bought in, making this process expensive. For example, if 15 seniors bought in at $8,000 and 15 freshmen buy in at $7,000, we must set aside $15,000 to cover the difference. Last year, the share price was $6,500 and our reduction plan is still underway. We have a long way to go but are proud this has been a priority during our tenure in CE.

Our Wages

Our wages vary across divisions and staff, based on a number of factors including tips, performance, and tenure. Our success relies on our customers and employees, some of whom have been with us for 5+ years, which is why investing in the people we work with is a top priority. Our Maid My Day cleaning representatives receive $20 in addition to regular bonuses and tips from customers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, this is nearly double the national average amongst maids and housekeeping cleaners. Furthermore, according to ZipRecruiter, the average hourly salary for a house cleaner is $10-13/hour in Durham, NC. Our GoBringIt drivers are guaranteed $11/hr, but often make more with tips. CE works with over 20 local residents and students, and we are proud of the economic impact we have on our community.

Our Margins

Without margins, our business would be unsustainable. A significant percentage of our divisional revenue covers expenses beyond paying employees, including accounting, technology, taxes, share price reduction, and financial aid, among other expenses. Our shareholders work an average of 10-15 hours per week over the course of a 16-week semester and receive an average dividend of $1,000-$1,500, resulting in an average hourly wage of $7/hour. Shareholders are in CE for the learning experience and community we have built, not simply to make money.

Our Recruitment Process

We recognize that Campus Enterprises has room to improve in terms of inclusion and diversity. Each year, we adjust our recruitment process with feedback from applicants. Our recruitment efforts involve word of mouth, hosting 2-3 information sessions, flyering freshman dorms, visiting large freshman classes (Econ, CS, Psychology 101, etc.), and sharing our process through our social media. Additionally, our recruitment process is strictly need-blind, with only the CEO and CFO knowing the financial need of applicants throughout the entire process. Financial aid is offered to those admitted who cannot afford to buy-in to the company—last year we offered $28,000 of aid. We are committed to further diversifying our applicant pool and future shareholder classes by reducing our share price, advertising to new subsets of the undergraduate population, and making the application process more accessible.

Relationship with Durham

In re-evaluating our philanthropic efforts this semester, Campus Enterprises sought to establish a sustainable and impactful partnership that takes into account its role in the Durham community. Because CE is a business rooted in Durham, we saw a value match with Community Empowerment Fund, an organization which works to assist local residents in achieving financial independence and stability. By pairing CEF’s mission with CE’s financial resources and capabilities in different service sectors, we envisioned a partnership that could add value and have a meaningful impact in our community. Both CE and CEF are dedicated to having continued conversations about how to move forward.

With this in mind, CE is proud of our impact, not only in terms of providing employment to those looking for flexible part-time jobs, but also through our partnerships with local small business owners, including several restaurants, startups, and screenprinters. Through these partnerships, our impact extends well beyond the individuals we employ, benefitting these businesses and their employees.
